Ernesto Paolillo has voiced his disapproval of the way in which the match between Juventus and Inter was refereed.

The former managing director and general director of Massimo Moratti’s Inter, speaking to the microphones of Sportmediaset.it, noted: “The suspensions of Icardi and Perišić seem a bit exaggerated and I say that impartially, whilst admitting to being a supporter of course.”

He continued: “The referee did not manage the final minutes well, which therefore created tension and triggered what has become two suspensions. A little extra attention would have probably led to milder sanctions.”

The 67-year-old then singled out the officials individually: “I give Rizzoli’s performance a negative assessment, but the linesman’s was even worse because of his failure to award a penalty for the Icardi-Mandžukić incident which demonstrated a lack of personality on his part.”

Paolillo also said: “If a penalty had been awarded, maybe the game would have been different. I do not think there is bad faith, but I am sure that Juventus would have been given a penalty if it had happened at the other end.”

He then discussed Stefano Pioli’s post-match conduct: “Pioli’s behaviour? Controversy must always be measured. Unfortunately for Inter, I am afraid that this defeat will affect their hopes of reaching the Champions League places. Inter are not inferior to the others, but are paying the price of starting the league campaign slowly. Earlier in the season, the players were badly prepared. When De Boer took charge, it was obvious that they were not prepared well.”
