Papu Gomez spoke in length with Gazzetta dello Sport:
The fixture list reads Napoli, Fiorentina, Inter next for Atalanta which is the hardest?
“We believe we can make Europe: even with only 3 points in 3 games, we would be at war. The most difficult is Napoli at the San Paolo. We have to have respect but no fear: if you’re aggressive, put in trouble all except Real, Barcelona and a few others. Against Fiorentina and Inter play on equal terms. ”
If you win you’d be just 3 points from the Champions League spots…
“In case of victory…It’s madness, we are not at the level of Napoli and Mertens is one of my favourites. His movement without the ball, cutting in near post…”
In the past was there any great opportunities to move to a big club?
“More than one. I wanted to join Stramaccioni at Inter, I had to sign on Monday but Strama lost 5-2 against Udinese at the weekend and was sacked. Even Montella wanted me at Fiorentina.”
That being said, would you follow him to Milan?
“Yeah…but here in Bergamo, I am a god.”
Maradona says Icardi does not deserve to play for the national team because he is the former wife of Maxi Lopez. What do you think?
“He was wrong and that’s enough. After all with Wanda, Mauro is married and has had children. For me at least he deserves to be called.”

LOVE this player.
We should have gotten him back then and we might have passed his peak now.
But ..he seems to be getting better with time, and this year he is a total killer, one of the top 5 player in Serie A in my view.
And let’s not forget that Diego Milto joined us at the same age, around 29-30…
Lol Milito was quite abit more proven than this guy who even failed in the ukrainian league.
With all due respect:
Who cares about Ukranian League 10 years ago or so?
We know for sure he did NOT fail in Serie A.
In Serie A he delivered for many seasons,he is God for Atalanta’s fans for a reason.
Milito?
He came from a team,Genoa, that was way behind current Atalanta.
And back then he had never played for Argentina..
So ,what do you mean by “quite a but more proven” ,exactly?
10 years ago? lol it was in 13-14.
Milito had been a great forward for several years before joining Inter. In fact he had scored 15+ league goals for the past 5 years in a row before joining Inter (only in one of those seasons did he score less than 20 overall).
Gomez joined Atalanta in 2014.
The year before he played in Ukraine like 20 games( scoring a few goals too) HATING IT on a personal level and ran away as fast as he could ,refusing to play there any longer, denouncing the fans violence, the very unstable and dangerous political situation and the fact that he could not talk, not a single word, to anyone there, because of unsurmounable language problems.
So,after having played in Catania the year before ,he ran back to Italy,to anyone who would buy him back,EVEN IF that meant making less money, just to live a better life.
So ,let’s put that whole Ukranian “failure” idea into prospective…
