Sky report that Stefano Pioli will deploy a three man defence against Roma on Sunday. Danilo D’Ambrosio will occupy the right centre back position. Should Pioli deploy a 4 man defence, D’Ambrosio will be in at right back and Ansaldi will be preferred over Nagatomo at left back. Furthermore, in midfield Kondogbia is favoured to start over Brozovic.

Pioli calls it justly “a 3 and a half defense sistem” ,cause it is versatile and adaptable to quick tactical changes, even during the game.
The 4 defense has often been somewhat a “3 and a 1/2” defensive system in Italy anyways.
For example:
In Trapattoni’s Inter Bergomi ,the right back ,was always much closer to the box and much more defensive than Brehme,the left back.
In Italy and juve of the 80’s Gentile was much tighter ,closer to the box and careful defensivey than Cabrini,the very offensive minded left back.
So ..it is still what in Italy was always traditionally called a “4 defense”.

D’Ambrosio as centre back is obvious. The real question is, how to stop Salah?
Just counter by 3 defence.
Probably Perisic will play all the left side and will mark salah in counter attack
Shame to waste Perisic as the only guy covering the left, deploy nagatomo and make his only mission to neutralize mosa, we then get to play 10 v 10 and if Kdog shows up I see him gagliardini and mario having a good battle with naingolan, stroot and ddr. Romas defense is pretty poor, let’s hope they don’t deploy rudiger at rb and spaletti sticks the the defensively weak peres/ palmieri combo.
Salah is obvious problem, but im more worry about nainggolan that always give us hard time. And dont forget dzeko, that guy is on fire

But one good new in my mind is this new Medel position,kind of like an old style “libero”,doubling on anything that comes forward..I think he is giving us some defensive stability there.
