Pioli: “I do not see anyone at the door ready to succeed me, UCL? We must be realistic”

Stefano Pioli spoke to Top Calcio 24:

How are you?

“I’m fine, we just finished training. It was a busy day, we are recovering physical and mental energy in view of Crotone.”

Had you been in charge from the start Inter would be second…

“I have not made such precise calculations. The average points is a concrete thing, and that means we did well. the undeserved defeat on Monday took away enthusiasm, but now we have to start again. Our goal remains to build something and achieve the best result possible, so as to build a greater future.”

Monday saw a throwback in midfield with Kondogbia and Brozovic partnering up…

“Gagiardini is a solid player, but without taking anything away from Roberto – who has been a major purchase – we had done well with Kondo and Brozovic before his arrival. In reviewing the game we had a bad reaction. I think Gagliardini is a great player, but we have the right characteristics to replace him, the important thing is that the team has an identity and great spirit .”

Have you ever thought ‘this is the Inter I want’ during a game this season? 

“I think there’s something that makes me think positive: the commitment and desire that my team bring on to the field every day. This is the basis from which to start. ”

Gabigol reacted poorly kicking a bottle against Sampdoria…

“I have not talked to him about the situation there and I do not care. Monday was not pleasing for anyone, the problem is over now we must resume our journey.”

“Meanwhile, I open the door, but I do not see anyone. I’m focused, motivated and calm, I like the club. I also know that in my career I sweated every step of the way and I will continue to do so.”

How do you feel as the coach of Inter?

“I feel well, and with Inter I want it to be a starting point.”

How far are Inter from the top?

“I think you should take one step at a time, it is right to be ambitious but it is also true that the top three have always been the same in recent seasons and that means something. What we can do is consolidate our growth then approach the top.”

What do you think about what Inzaghi has done with Lazio?

“He’s doing great  however, there are 8 games remaining for everyone. We’ll see at the end where we are and where the others are. There are seven teams fighting for the top 5-6 positions, we have to sit tight.”

Champions League?

“We must be realistic, there are 8 games and we know that we have the qualities to make them our own. Sixth? I think you forget that was the starting point. Now we remain focused, but if we keep to the average of two points per game… ”

“I’m lucky to share Appiano Gentile with the club, both with Ausilio and Gardini. Of course we speak of the future as well as the continuity.”
