The introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in Serie A this season has been a catalyst for much debate & caused some controversy already in these early stages of the season.

The 2017-2018 Serie A season has seen the use of the VAR system. With mixed reviews already much of the criticism has come from the the amount of time it takes to make a decision but with the system still in its’ infancy there’s still plenty of room for improvement. The introduction of VAR has also contributed to Inter already being awarded 3 penalties in their opening 5 games of the season. A statistic that puts Inter top of a rather particular league table compiled by OPTA Statistics amongst the clubs in Europe’s top 5 leagues in Italy, Spain, Germany, France & England.
