Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen could well be an idea for Inter in the January mercato according to reports coming out of Spain. The Belgian defender knows both Luciano Spalletti and Walter Sabatini following his loan spell with Roma last year and the 31-year-old could see Inter as an opportunity to relaunch himself and secure a spot in the Belgian national team for next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

“Clubs tried to sign me on the last day of the summer mercato, but it was impossible,” he said when speaking on the rumours surrounding his future, adding “I have a high release clause of €80 million and I’m training to stay at the top. Now I just have to wait until late January and decide my future then.”

Vermaelen rose to prominence in the Ajax youth system and joined Arsenal in 2009 as a result. In his first year at the Gunners he was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year and in 2012 was made the captain of the club. He joined Barcelona in 2015 for a fee of €15 million.
