Former referee Nicola Rizzoli, who is now one of the main overseers of VAR in Serie A, spoke to reporters on the sidelines of an event at Ussi Toscana on the introduction of VAR and his thoughts on how it has went and been perceived.

“We’re very pleased with the use of VAR, we’re improving a lot and shortening the decision making time. It’s clear we need to gain some more experience, but then experience brings its own mistakes to bear. The objective is to improve even more, but we’re on the right track.”

Speaking on how he feels the introduction has went, Rizzoli added: “Change is something that people are naturally afraid of, we’re changing and improving and I think all the changes are positive,” before concluding “Italy is a pilot country for the introduction of VAR, and is highly regarded by IFAB.”

VAR’s introduction has been met with controversy, particularly the length of time it is taking some officials to come to a decision with VAR assistance.
