In an interview with Fantagazzetta, the former Inter and Italian international midfielder, Cristiano Zanetti, revealed that he had one big regret in his career and it was that fateful day in Rome on the 5th May 2002 when Inter lost the Serie A title on the last day of the season.
Inter had managed to get themselves to within a game of winning Serie A for the first time since 1989 and they faced Lazio away in Rome. In a bizarre twist of fate, the Lazio fans had decided that they were going to support Inter for the game as a defeat for Inter whilst bitter rivals Roma won could potentially make the Giallorossi champions. So in front of a packed Stadio Olimpico crowd which consisted mainly of Inter fans, the Nerazzurri needed a win in order to win the Scudetto. However they lost the game 4-2 to Lazio after twice being ahead and the title went to Juventus instead.
“That game on the 5th May remains my biggest regret. It still hurts me now after all these years. I remember it was a strange game. The pre-match was normal like any other game and I felt nothing more than usual. Yet when we got out there on the pitch it became so difficult for various reasons, in fact it was the most difficult game of my life” Zanetti concluded.
