When interviewed by Mediaset Premium, Gabriel Omar Batistuta, Fiorentina’s historical Lion King and obviously a great connoisseur of Argentine attackers, spoke about various topics expressing his opinion, among other things, on the duel between Gonzalo Higuain and Mauro Icardi concerning the Argentinian national team: “What’s missing for Argentina to win the World Cup? In Argentina this happens, we have a team that always comes there one step away from the victory and then misses the last step. On the one hand there is this aspect but on the other side there is a team that has made two finals in the last two editions of the America’s Cup and in the last World Cup. So it means that the team is there, it’s hard to say what’s missing.
“The players are there, the game was there but in front they found teams that had more luck or were better. I’m happy with the national team, I would have been happier if we had won the World Cup but I’m a sportsman and I understand that you can not always win and football often happens. We do not always win the best, we only want to win in Argentina and if we get second, we are all not enough. But the reality is not this, our players play all over the world, everywhere they do beautiful things, everyone talks about them and we have little to ask these guys.”
Batistuta was asked who he chooses between Higuain and Icardi: “I believe that Higuain will be at the World Cup because he has been playing well for several years. At the moment there is no-one better than him, I respect Icardi but he does not seem superior to Pipita. They should both go for what they are doing but there is no place for everyone.
“A new Batistuta? No, there is Higuain, there is Icardi who are good players and maybe even better than Batistuta. But they have emerged at the same time and can not all play in the national team. Who will triumph in Russia? Argentina has many possibilities, we can win easily as well as Brazil or Germany. There are great teams plus the surprise that there always ia. It is better not to make predictions but Argentina is one of those teams that could win. And I think they will go far this time too” Batistuta concludes.
