Former Inter and Argentine international striker Gabriel Batistuta is the latest player to have weighed in on Inter captain Mauro Icardi being snubbed for the Argentine national team.

“As far as I understand, Jorge Sampaoli has already excluded Icardi. I am surprised that he has already done so now, I would have taken him,” Batistuta, who scored 54 times in 77 national team appearances, told TyC Sports.

“It is a waste that he and Paulo Dybala were not called. I understand that there is no place for everyone but I would have called Icardi because a player who scores a lot of goals in Serie A can help you in the World Cup.”

Icardi debuted for the Argentine national team in 2013 but had to wait four years to earn the other three of his total four caps, despite scoring for fun in the years in between. This season he has netted 22 goals in 26 games in all competitions for Inter.
