Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio continues to work on extending club captain Mauro Icardi’s stay at the San Siro according to a report from Premium Sport.
Rumours of a new contract have circulated in the media for quite some time amid continued interest from some of world football’s top clubs like Real Madrid.
Icardi’s current contract with the Nerazzurri runs through to the end of the 2020/21 Serie A season and has a €110 million foreign club release clause within it. In the new contract, in a bid to fend off interest, Ausilio plans to raise that clause significantly to €180 million.
TuttoMercatoWeb meanwhile report that Inter qualifying for the Champions League for next season could prove decisive in whether Icardi remains or not. The player has yet to play a game in European football’s premier club competition and as a result could consider a move away if Inter are to fail to qualify.
Moreover, TuttoMercatoWeb report that Champions League is decisive for more than just Icardi’s future with Suning’s marketing plan relying heavily on qualification.
