Ex-Inter Midfielder Guly: “I’m Not Sure Icardi & Lautaro Can Play Together”

Former Inter midfielder Andres Guglielminpietro has backed Lautaro Martinez to do ‘brilliant things’ in Italy but is unsure the forward will be able to play together with Mauro Icardi.

Martinez is due to begin life with the Nerazzurri in July after undergoing a medical in Milan last week, and claimed in an interview on Monday that head coach Luciano Spalletti intends to play the two forwards together next season.

However Guglielminpietro, nicknamed ‘Guly’, does not believe Martinez and Icardi are compatible, despite backing the 20 year-old to make a good impression in Serie A.

“Lautaro plays as a centre-forward but he can also play outside the box,” he told RMC Sport. “He’s a generous player. I don’t know if he and Icardi could play together, not least because you have Perisic on the left wing.

“In Spalletti’s 4-2-3-1 I think Rafinha is more suited to the position behind the striker, so it’ll be difficult for them to play together.

“I didn’t expect Icardi or Lautaro to be left out of Argentina’s World Cup squad; it’s a bit of a risky decision because both of them have scored lots of goals [this season]. The latter is a youngster who will do brilliant things in Italy.”
