In his first managerial job at Empoli, he saved the club from relegation from Serie C in season one and in the following season won promotion to Serie B. In his third year in charge he secured back to back promotions with the Azzurri and lead them to Serie A.
In his first spell at Roma, the Calciopoli scandal helped Roma to a second placed finish in the end. In his second year in charge he replicated the second placed finish and won a Coppa Italia and SuperCoppa double.
In his second spell with Roma, he took over the side from Rudi Garcia in January and lead them to a third placed finish and lead them to a second placed finish the following year, recording a record points total for the Giallorossi in the process.
