Inter must wait until Wednesday before finding out if they stand a chance of signing Luka Modric from Real Madrid, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Modric was due to return to pre-season training after his summer holidays on Sunday after finishing his FIFA World Cup duties on 15 July, and is expected to hold talks with club president Florentino Perez over his future in the Spanish capital.

However the midfielder’s agents have leaked to certain sections of the media that he has been given an extra three days of relaxation time before returning to work, which means that his meeting with Perez cannot take place until Wednesday.

“If Luka, who is pushing to sign for Inter, asks Florentino to let him leave and is told that he can do so for a reasonable price (which for Inter means a paid loan with an option to buy), then things could start to fall into place,” the Milanese publication wrote on Sunday.

“The Croatian was approached by various Inter fans while on holiday in Sardinia and was asked about his future, but he didn’t provide any clues: just a few circumstantial smiles. But the fact that his agents have offered him to [Piero] Ausilio and [Giovanni] Gardini would suggest that it’s not impossible he leaves Madrid.

“Sources close to Real Madrid in Spain are confident that the 32 year-old will not go the same way as Cristiano Ronaldo, but you never know, because the will of the player is powerful enough to overcome anything – even the €750 million price tag that Perez slapped on Modric after the voices out of Italy began to grow louder during the week.

“That’s why Inter remain hopeful. The club’s management are aware that the deal they have in front of them is not easy, but at certain conditions it wouldn’t be impossible either.”
