Former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello has heaped praise on Inter transfer target Luka Modric and believes that Real Madrid can not allow him to depart the club.

“Real can not afford to let him [Modric] go after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. Today Modric is one of the most important players in the world,” Capello said in a message with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Modric, alongside Ngolo Kanté, is the most important midfielder in the World, he is the one who has best interpreted the modern concept of the role, his evolution over time has been interesting and in some respects exemplary.

Capello also spoke on what the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus means for Italian football as a whole.

“It means that we can return to talk about Italian football being one of the best in the world. In the eighties and nineties, we were at the top but we lost our way. TV rights and merchandising have allowed England, Germany and Spain to surpass us, but with Cristiano Ronaldo we can try to raise our heads again.”
