Luciano Spalletti remains optimistic about Inter’s chances of enjoying a successful 2018-19 season despite the club’s failed attempt to sign Luka Modric, as Corriere della Sera reported on Sunday.

Spalletti’s side will inaugurate their new Serie A campaign away to Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium and must overcome the troubles they faced against the Neroverdi last season, when they suffered two defeats that seriously jeopardised their chances of securing qualification for the Champions League.

Despite the ominous precedents, however, the Nerazzurri’s head coach was in good spirits during his pre-match press conference on Saturday and is confident Inter can improve on what they offered last year.

“Inter see themselves not as an unknown quantity but as a solid entity,” the Milan-based paper wrote, “which is ready to pursue the dream of a high-profile season despite not having signed Luka Modric, the man who would really have reduced the gap between themselves and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus.

“Their disappointment [over not bringing the Croatian midfielder to San Siro] has been assuaged by the seven signings they did make – Asamoah, De Vrij, Lautaro Martinez, Nainggolan, Politano, Vrsaljko and Keita.

“A new array of players which Spalletti is counting upon to give the Bianconeri a run for their money, enjoy a less stressful campaign than the last one and ‘offer up a good spectacle’ for the supporters who have already gobbled up 40,000 season tickets and spent years waiting for a team that’s competitive on all fronts, both in Serie A and in the Champions League.”
