Inter defender Stefan de Vrij reflected upon Inter’s 1-0 opening day loss to Sassuolo and knows all to well that there are things to be improved upon going forward.

“It certainly was not the start we wanted and we were looking for. We knew this was a difficult pitch to play on and we were not helped so much by it but it is not an excuse,” he stated in an interview with Sky Sport.

“We were inaccurate, especially in the first half where we made many wrong steps and we were caught by surprise on the counterattack and we have to improve on that. We have to raise the tempo of the game, certainly. We can improve on that.”

The Dutchman, who was making his competitive debut for the Nerazzurri, concluded the interview post-match at the MAPEI Stadium by talking about Sassuolo’s penalty.

“On the penalty what can you say…these episodes always happen in matches.”
