Last night Inter played Sassuolo away from home which ended in a 1-0 game in favour of Sassuolo. The goal came from a penalty shot which was given away by Miranda. The result of the game stems from greater issues and the result shouldn’t be put solely on the veteran center back. Yesterday was the start of the season and as history proves to Interista’s around the world, it doesn’t matter who the opposition is, they should never be taken lightly. Spalletti put out a line up that was the same to the one he had been using all pre-season long. The problem with this is that it was no where near to the best possible line up that could have been put out; granted all the injury precautions.

The difference between both teams was that Sassuolo played like they had nothing to lose while Inter played as if they had something to prove. In reality, Spalletti should have lined up his men slightly differently. If one were to look at the starting eleven, it’s understandable why Inter seemed to have trouble finding the back of the net. Two of the four attacking players played out of position. Lautaro Martinez is and always has been an out and out striker and should be played along side Icardi and not behind him. This would allow him to truly fulfill his nickname; El Toro while also helping divert attention away from Icardi.

Secondly, all though Asamoah, early on in his career, played that role higher up the field at the stage he’s at in his career and with the skill set he’s developed he should be playing with a lot more defensive responsibility. It must be understood that Asamoah did not play a bad game at all, but may have been a lot more useful if he was playing in what many consider to be his natural left back position.

In regards to the back line, it was basically transformed into a three back because Dalbert just cannot carry his own weight. Which is yet another reason why Asamoah should be pushed back and assume more defensive responsibility. This is also the first time Miranda and De Vrij played together for more than half an hour, it’s inevitable that the chemistry of the backline will look a bit shaky.

All in all, the first game started off on the wrong foot versus a competitor who’s gotten the better of Inter six times in the last ten games. Spalletti is logically fully aware that this line up isn’t the best possible line up that can be produced on the field but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to pick up points. Things will get better and it’s important to note that this is only the beginning of the uphill battle that is; the Serie A.
