Bartosz Bereszynski has told reporters in Poland that he was close to joining Inter this summer before they completed the signing of Sime Vrsaljko at right-back.

Bereszynski, 26, has made 43 appearances in Serie A since arriving from Legia Warsaw in January 2017 and impressed for the Blucerchiati last season, to the extent that he was identified by the Nerazzurri as a potential replacement for Joao Cancelo, whom they were unable to sign on a permanent basis from Valencia.

“I was close to Inter [during the summer],” he told Łączy Nas Piłka on Thursday. “My name had been mentioned in the transfer market. However after Cancelo left they decided to sign Vrsaljko instead.

“Never mind, I won’t be pulling my hair out about it – I’m happy to be at Sampdoria nevertheless and I hope to do well here.”

Bereszynski has made 11 appearances for the Polish national team, featuring in all three of their matches at this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.
