Former Inter midfielder Mateo Kovacic has described his move to Chelsea as ‘an incredible feeling’ and is confident of resurrecting his career on loan at Stamford Bridge this season.

The Croatian international made 110 appearances in all competitions during a three-year spell at Real Madrid, having joined the club from Inter in the summer of 2015, but was desperate to secure a move elsewhere during the transfer window as he felt he needed more game-time.

Eventually his wish was granted as Chelsea agreed to sign the 24 year-old on a season-long loan, and Kovacic believes the trust that new head coach Maurizio Sarri has in him will help him to succeed in the Premier League.

“After three years in which I’d not played much at Real Madrid it was important I found a club that wanted me and a coach that trusted me,” he told Sport Klub.

“That’s what I’ve found here at Chelsea: it’s what I needed and I hope it stays this way. Sarri has known me for a long time and I think that’s what counts.

“We have a phenomenal team with lots of great players, so it hasn’t been too difficult for me to settle in quickly. It’s an incredible feeling.

“I’ll try and do my best for this club: it’s a new league for me and that’s always hard at the start, but I’m confident that the coach and my teammates will help me out. I hope we can have a great season.”
