In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, former Portuguese international Nuno Gomes revealed that he believes Joao Mario has not succeeded at Inter due to being misunderstood.

“He was not understood in Italy. The fans put him under too much pressure and Inter went through a couple of difficult years, but he still remains a top player,” the striker, best known for his time at Benfica, said.

“He is a cut above the rest and he has wonderful feet. He just needs to play and feel the confidence of his club so he can do his best.”

Joao Mario arrived at Inter off the back of winning EURO 2016 with Portugal in a €44 million deal from Sporting Lisbon but has ultimately failed to live up to his price tag. The 25-year-old significantly damaged his chances at the club with comments made during the summer and he and Inter hoped to part ways during the summer. However no adequate offers arrived and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him at San Siro.
