Ghana national team manager Kwesi Appiah has defended his decision to start Inter defender Kwadwo Asamoah from the bench in the 1-0 loss to Kenya in the African Cup Of Nations Qualifying match on Saturday.

“I do not play players because of their names alone. I play the players who could make the right impact at particular moment. Just because Kwadwo was starting on the bench does not mean that he is not a good player as he is one of the best players,” Appiah told Ghanaweb.com.

Asamoah had earned a recall to the Black Stars squad after a four year absence that he himself triggered to enable himself to get back to tip top condition following years of niggling recurring injuries that now appear to be behind him.

The 29-year-old joined Inter on a free transfer over the summer following his release from Juventus and has made three competitive appearances so far this season.
