Ahead of Inter’s return to the Champions League next week, Corriere dello Sport have recounted manager Luciano Spalletti’s and his lack of success since 2012 where he has been in charge of both Zenit St. Petersburg and Roma.

Spalletti has never had much success when it comes to going deep in to the competition in recent years although he did lead Roma to the quarter-finals over ten years ago. While at Zenit between 2009-2014, he was unable to lead the Russian giants past the first knockout stage.

In his second spell at Roma, Spalletti again had a lack of success in European football’s top continental competition and could not better his previous results with Zenit. Spalletti’s Giallorossi sides were eliminated by Real Madrid in the first knockout stage and failed to make the competition altogether in the second year having lost out to Porto in the Champions League playoff match.

The Rome based newspaper believe that this current Inter side is better equipped than both of the sides he previously had in the Champions League which should in theory mean he has an increased chance of success. However, he must lead Inter past Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur in the group stages which will be not be easy.
