Mauro Icardi and Radja Nainggolan need to improve their understanding up front if Inter are to start playing better football this season, according to former Nerazzurri defender Daniele Adani.

Inter secured a last-minute victory away to Sampdoria on Saturday evening after Marcelo Brozovic struck a 94th-minute winner but opinions were divided over the standard of Icardi and Nainggolan’s performances, with the latter being substituted by Luciano Spalletti in the closing stages.

“Inter’s last two victories are definitely important,” Adani told Sky Sport last night.

“It’s interesting though that, both against Tottenham and tonight, Radja Nainggolan has been taken off while Inter were chasing the game. For me that means he still needs to prove himself as the leader of this team.

“I think Nainggolan needs to improve his understanding with Icardi: can you imagine what would happen if those two started playing each other through on goal? The entire team would start to function better going forward.

“In any case, if Inter want to prove that they’ve definitively kick-started their season then they need to confirm their progress against Fiorentina [on Tuesday].”
