The Gazzetta dello Sport report on the use of VAR during last night’s game between Inter and Sampdoria which correctly cancelled two of Inter’s goals.

“At the end of the first half, the first of three heavily-discussed incidents occurred. Nainggolan gave Inter the lead by scoring a great goal from the edge of the box, but a minute later the referee indicated that the goal would not stand thanks to his assistants in the review room.

“The incident that was deemed offside happened more than 10 seconds before the goal was scored because the linesman did not notice that both Icardi and D’Ambrosio were offside from Politano’s pass.

“Is it right to go so far back to see that the goal should not stand? Yes it is, because the protocol does not set time limits on how far back they are allowed to go, therefore the decision, even though annoying, is correct.

“This operation went a little more smoothly during the second half when Asamoah scored a goal with the referee failing to see that the ball had gone out of play. Two minutes later, Defrel was also ruled offside after scoring for Sampdoria.

“Finally during the last minute of the game, Brozovic scores and Spalletti celebrates towards the camera. The fourth referee considered it to be unsportsmanlike and signalled it to Guida, who then dismisses Spalletti.”
