Inter’s recent upturn in form is about more than just motivation, according to former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi.

The Nerazzurri secured a fifth straight win in all competitions on Wednesday when they came from behind to beat PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, confirming that their early-season struggles are now well and truly behind them.

Writing in Friday’s Gazzetta dello Sport, Sacchi praised the Nerazzurri for the resilience they showed after falling behind at the Philips Stadion, before reiterating his view that Mauro Icardi needs to participate in the team’s build-up play more.

“Spalletti’s Inter seem to be up and running now and they have found great motivation,” he said.

“They went behind undeservedly against PSV but they had the strength of character to win the match thanks to goals from Nainggolan and Icardi, who is a terrific talent but needs to be more involved in the team’s play.

“Now Inter are top of their group and their defeats at the start of the season are but a distant memory. How their world has changed since the 85th minute of Inter-Tottenham: George Bernard Shaw used to say that football is the art of compressing the history of the universe into 90 minutes.

“If Inter can find the same motivation Juventus have to keep winning then their overall play and their results will reap the benefits.”
