SPAL president Walter Mattioli is confident his side can beat Inter at the Stadio Paolo Mazza this evening, despite describing the Nerazzurri as ‘a team from another planet’.

Luciano Spalletti’s men will look to extend their winning streak in all competitions to six matches tonight in Ferrara, after a red hot period of form that has seen them shoot back up to fourth in the Serie A table.

However SPAL took points off them in this fixture last season, securing a 1-1 draw in January thanks to a stoppage-time equaliser from Alberto Paloschi, and remain bullish about their chances.

“Inter are from another planet but I know that SPAL can beat them,” Mattioli told Gazzetta dello Sport on Sunday.

“They’re one of the best teams in Europe, full of internationals, with so much technique and physicality.

“How do you beat them? Aggression, dynamism, intensity and pressing. You can’t wait for them, you need to be raring to go.”

Should Leonardo Semplici’s men pull off a shock tonight they would secure SPAL’s first win against Inter in over 50 years, since 1962.

“I was probably at that match,” Mattioli added. “Back then we had the likes of Dell’Omodarme, Massei, Cervato… we were a great side. I hope history can repeat itself with today’s players.”
