Many calls have been made for Inter manager Luciano Spalletti to play Mauro Icardi and Lautaro Martinez as partners up top together and Rome based newspaper Corriere dello Sport believe that this could happen and have given reasons as to why it has not happened more regularly already.

“Spalletti expressed himself only a few weeks ago, after the win over Cagliari and expressed the need to have balance on the pitch. In fact, that balance seemed to be there during the summer, Lautaro had often played behind Icardi, but the duo, like all of their teammates crashed and burned against Sassuolo on the opening day. After that day, the project was put aside.

“The truth is that, as Spalletti pointed out, first the Nerazzurri team must grow. Perhaps once this achieved a striking partnership can be seen but this may only happen in situations of need when Inter must risk something.”
