Former Milan manager Fabio Capello has backed current Rossoneri boss Gennaro Gattuso in wake of him receiving criticism from former Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi in view of Sunday’s Milan derby.

“I am with Gattuso. Gattuso is giving a mentality to Milan and making them aware of their strengths, while directors Leonardo and Paolo Maldini are an important part of this project,” Capello, who managed them very successfully in the early to mid 1990s, said in an interview with Radio Anch’io Sport.

Capello, who last managed Inter’s Chinese cousins Jiangsu Suning, then spoke on both the teams ahead of the match.

“Milan has grown a lot. They have excellent players and are playing on an equal level with Inter who have also grown thanks to excellent late results in recent weeks.”

He concluded the interview by weighing in on the Mauro Icardi vs Gonzalo Higuain debate.

“I coached Higuain when he was younger and even then he had a great finishing ability. He has improved a lot in playing with the team and this is what is needed to play in Europe. On top of this he has always been a great guy.

“Icardi will be able to create some problems for Milan and I really like both. Icardi is the classic example of the penalty box striker. Higuain moves better in general but the defenders of Inter are more prepared for him.”
