The Mayor of Milan and Inter supporter Giuseppe Sala has predicted a 2-2 draw for tonight’s Derby della Madonnina, but admits he is too nervous to go and watch the match at San Siro.

Inter will be looking for their seventh win in all competitions this evening when they face city rivals Milan, but the Rossoneri are also in good form after winning three matches in a row before the international break.

“I think the derby will finish 2-2,” Sala told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It’ll be a derby with lots of goals: when Icardi and Higuain are around you can score against good defences.

“I haven’t been to see the derby live since I became Mayor [in 2016]. I’m too nervous when I’m at the stadium… I’ll watch the game tonight with friends. I will be going to Inter-Barcelona [on 6 November] though.”

Sala also had words of encouragement for Luciano Spalletti and Mauro Icardi, before nominating Dejan Stankovic as his favourite Inter player of the last decade.

“A lot of Interisti still have Mourinho in their hearts, but Spalletti hasn’t done a bad job with the material at his disposal. It’ll be an interesting clash between him and Gattuso.

“The debate about how Icardi only scores and does nothing else is lazy: everyone wants a striker who can help the team play better but often those players don’t score goals.

“If you ask me you can’t criticise anyone who’s consistently scoring more than 20 goals a season.

“I still play five-a-side football and I wear the same number as Dejan, the no. 5. He’s a fascinating character from many points of view.”
