With the focus on players who are available on free transfers whetting the appetites of clubs in Europe, Gianluca Di Marzio has taken stock of the strategies of the top clubs in Serie A.

According to him, Inter are looking to strengthen their squad next summer by signing a defender, not least because Andrea Ranocchia’s contract is expiring in June.

With that in mind, they remain on high alert over the situation surrounding Jan Vertonghen, who in all likelihood will also become a free agent in the summer.

Vertonghen’s case is different to that of Toby Alderweireld, another Spurs centre-back, but the Nerazzurri like him too. The London club have an option to extend the Belgian’s contract and if they exercised it they would establish a €30 million release clause.

With Ranocchia’s contract set to expire and Miranda also seeming likely to leave, it seems very likely that Inter will sign one or two centre backs in the summer and will hope they can make use of a free transfer, similar to that of Stefan De Vrij.
