Despite it being in its name, a free transfer is not exactly that and Turin based newspaper have revealed the true prices that Inter paid to secure the services of Stefan de Vrij and Kwadwo Asamoah on ‘free’ transfers over the summer.

Often in these deals agents charge a high commission fee and the defensive duo cost Inter a combined €9 million (de Vrij €5.5 million and Asamoah €3.5 million).

In comparison to other recent free transfers it seems a small price to pay in the long run. Paul Pogba joined Juventus from Manchester United on a free transfer but his agent Mino Raiola would go on to pick up around half of the €100 million fee United would pay to bring him back to Old Trafford. Juventus most recent free signing was that of Emre Can from Liverpool but in actual reality he cost the Bianconeri some €16 million to sign between commission fees and other things.
