Dejan Stankovic praised Luciano Spalletti yesterday for helping Marcelo Brozovic express his full potential in Inter’s midfield.

Brozovic was sent off at the end of Inter’s defeat to Atalanta last weekend but has been consistently one of the Nerazzurri’s most reliable players this season, having been very close to leaving the club back in January.

Speaking to Croatian newspaper Vecernji List, treble hero Stankovic described Spalletti as ‘the right coach’ for the midfielder and said Brozovic’s growth in confidence has been key to his upturn in form.

“Everything Inter do goes through him now,” he said.

“Brozovic doesn’t have the same highs and lows or sudden dips in form like he might have had a couple of years ago.

“He really appreciates the faith everyone has in him now, be it the fans or his teammates, and that gives him more confidence to take risks during games – he isn’t discouraged when he makes a mistake.

“Perhaps Marcelo just needed more time to develop, but sometimes you just need to be lucky to find the right coach.

“Before he settled on his central midfield role I used to call him ‘the mosquito’, because he’d played in every position and kept moving everywhere, but Spalletti did well to put him in front of the defence.”
