Newly appointed Inter CEO Beppe Marotta stopped by Sky Sport Italia to make his first pre-match declarations since joining the club.

Marotta began by talking about the change of clubs he has made stating that: ““Every time you change club you feel something different, we’re very optimistic and believe we can achieve great things. We’re in the interim phase of the season, being eliminated from the Champions League has left a bitter taste in our mouths, it was important to us that we pass the group stage but now we have to look forwards and aim for the other objectives we had set out to achieve.”

Marotta then spoke about the contract renewal of Inter captain Mauro Icardi stating that: “Icardi is our captain, a fantastic player and he deserves the utmost respect. I did read Wanda’s tweet, but I’ve only just got here. We will discuss it all soon, it’s an important subject. I’ve had the opportunity to chat with Spalletti very often, his way of saying things has to be interpreted and his especially has to be interpreted in a positive manner. The club needs to put the manager and the players in the best possible conditions to succeed, then the manager needs to make the most of what he has at his disposal and finally you have to wait the results on the pitch.”

“Compared to when I arrived at Juventus, Inter is far more ahead. The management team is prepared, the team is competitive. I want to bring my experience and give my contribution to an already strong club. It is a different situation to 2010. The gap with Juve is now strong, the changes in ownership have made us lose a sense of belonging, but now with the Zhang family it is up to us to repay the trust they have shown us. It will take some time, I do not know if it will take months or a year or two, but we must look forward with great optimism to reach important goals even in this season” Marotta continued.

In conclusion Marotta was asked about the transfer window to which he replied: “It is not the team that spends the most money who wins. Paradoxically, money is only complementary to everything else. Tonight I will watch the Derby della Mole, Inter permitting, but only because I always watch all the Serie A matches, even if I can not forget the splendid period at Juventus. It’s like being on my first day of school. For me this is an observation phase and there is great desire to do well and obtain positive results.”

“Spalletti is an excellent coach, he has done well in his career and we need to leave him alone to work. He arrived last year and he managed to bring Inter back to an important position. He has all the qualities to be able to take up a role as a protagonist it is up to club to make the right deals on the transfer market. This group of players has a lot of individual quality but it is a young group, it is normal that you have highs and lows.”
