Referee Rosario Abisso has received criticism from the Italian media for his officiating during Inter’s 1-0 win over Udinese on Saturday.

Luciano Spalletti’s side ended a run of four games without a win thanks to a second-half penalty from Mauro Icardi, after Seko Fofana had handled in the box.

However Abisso did not spot the infringement in real time and had to rely on a VAR review to correct his mistake, leading to criticism from today’s Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Milan-based paper took a similarly dim view of his decision not to award Inter a free-kick during the second half when Valon Behrami fouled Matteo Politano, instead opting to play advantage.

And they also disapproved of Abisso’s failure to punish two stoppage-time fouls on Radja Nainggolan and Lautaro Martinez, before adding that he allowed injury time to continue for 30 seconds too many.

Waving play on following Bram Nuytinck’s challenge on Icardi, for which Inter had requested a penalty, was said to be the correct call.
