Javier Zanetti has shared his thoughts on Inter’s Europa League round of 32 draw that has pitted the Nerazzurri against Austrian club Rapid Wien.

“The draw went well but we know there are no easy games in this competition that we want to be protagonists in. The short distance we have to travel makes things simpler,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“The Europa League is a prestigious competition, composed of teams that are difficult to tackle. Winning would give prestige to the club and we will face it in the best way we can.

“We are sorry for the missed opportunity in the Champions League. We knew from when the draw was made that it was a difficult group. We proved that the team can be competitive, we have to tackle the Europa League well and winning it would be important.”

Zanetti was then asked about the situation with regard to Mauro Icardi renewing his contract with the club.

“I’m not the one who has to answer. We see him during the week and he’s very happy and calm, there’s a great relationship between the club and his people. I just think we have to wait for the right time, but then again, we are happy. He is our captain, our point of reference, and it must go on like this.”

He concluded by speaking on the upcoming January transfer window.

I think the team is competitive already but alongside Ausilio, Marotta and Spalletti, I will make evaluations. If there are opportunities to reinforce the squad we will certainly look at it.”
