Inter president Steven Zhang will play a key role in securing Mauro Icardi’s contract extension over the coming weeks, Sport Mediaset reported this morning.

Icardi has yet to sign a new deal with the Nerazzurri after weeks of public tension between the club and his wife and agent Wanda Nara, with no official meeting planned between the parties to continue talks.

However the forward’s excellent relationship with Zhang, who replaced Erick Thohir as Inter president in October, should ensure an agreement is reached in the end.

Zhang will soon intervene in person and present the player’s entourage with an increased offer of €7m per season in wages, in order to move negotiations along.

Inter know Icardi is deeply attached to Inter and does not intend to leave the club, and are therefore confident they will agree on a new deal eventually.

Icardi’s current contract expires in 2021 and contains a €110 million release clause Inter would like to remove.
