Gabriele Gravina, the president of the Italian football federation, the FIGC, has revealed that some changes to VAR could soon arrive.

“The recourse to VAR and the involvement of the referee’s employee must be consistent. I think we will arrive at two challenges, two calls each. We are all for the usage of the technology. Last year its usage was extraordinary but this year I have not liked it and I am for constant usage. When the tools are there to be used they need to be,” he said in an interview with calcioefinanza.it.

Gravina then spoke on the procedure when it comes to how discrimination is tackled if heard during games.

“The procedure is very clear. It foresees, however, that there will be a person in charge in the shape of a federal prosecutor or a person in charge of public order to establish that in case of territorial or racial discrimination. The referee will have to bring the teams to the middle of the field to temporarily suspend the match. If the discrimination does not end the teams will be taken to the dressing rooms and then the security officer will determine what will happen after that.

“Even if it is only a small group, the procedure must be applied. Attention must be paid to the songs. When there are 50 or 100 people involved, such a small number is easily identifiable and the clubs can prevent entry into the stadiums for a long time. I am convinced that the clubs want to help.”
