Inter must ‘recover’ four key players if they are to arrest their mid-season slump in form, Gazzetta dello Sport wrote on Saturday.
The Nerazzurri have won just once in their opening four matches of 2019 and were harshly criticised by supporters and media following Thursday’s Coppa Italia elimination at the hands of Lazio.
Failure to beat Bologna this weekend would worsen the crisis and heap more pressure on Luciano Spalletti, however the Milan-based publication reminded readers today that all is not lost yet.
Inter could still enjoy a successful second half of the season if four players return to form: Mauro Icardi, Ivan Perisic, Radja Nainggolan and Lautaro Martinez.
Icardi scored the stoppage-time penalty which took Inter to a shoot-out against Lazio in midweek but has not scored in Serie A since 16 December, while his last goal from open play dates back to the 2-2 draw with Roma on 2 December.
Nainggolan and Martinez both missed penalties on Thursday and are likely to have been damaged psychologically, with the Belgian also carrying the baggage of a disastrous first six months at Inter.
And Perisic must put his January transfer window temptations behind him after failing to secure a move to Arsenal.
“Perisic is a valuable asset that Inter need to protect,” Gazzetta wrote.
“Both parties need to rebuild their bridges, because if Perisic still wants to leave in the summer he’ll need to start making his dribbling and runs on the wing do the talking again.
“It’s those which enchanted everyone at the last World Cup and saw his price tag rocket upwards.”
Perisic will make a public appearance alongside CEO Giuseppe Marotta on Monday as Croatia national team manager Zlatko Dalic receives an award.
