Lautaro Martinez has been criticised by Tuttosport today for missing too many key chances over the last few weeks.

Martinez joined Inter from Racing Avellaneda in a deal worth up to €21 million this summer and impressed during pre-season, but the forward has failed to live up the hype during his first six months in Italy.

The 21-year-old missed one of the penalties that cost Inter a place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals as they were eliminated by Lazio in midweek, having previously wasted a glorious opportunity to win the match at the end of normal time.

Since the start of December he has also spurned key chances against Juventus and Torino in Serie A and against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, with Inter failing to win on all three occasions.

“Lautaro remains the player who gets the crowd excited when he starts warming up at San Siro, but he’s been a big disappointment lately,” Tuttosport wrote.

“It’s true that he scored the most important goal of his Inter career so far against Napoli [on 26 December], and that he did it in stoppage time, but in other matches…

“Perhaps they’re mistakes you can make at his age, but it’s time to start cutting them out.”
