Former Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has warned Inter to keep an eye on Atalanta in the race for Champions League qualification this season.

The Bergamaschi moved to within five points of Luciano Spalletti’s side as they beat Cagliari 1-0 on Monday evening, taking advantage of the draw between Roma and Milan the night before.

Inter extended their winless run to four games on Sunday when they lost at home to struggling Bologna and are now just five points clear of Gian Piero Gasperini’s men.

“Five points is a big gap for Inter but Atalanta need to be included in the fight for third place now,” Costacurta told Sky Sport yesterday.

Costacurta also played down talk of a rift between Spalletti and chief executive Giuseppe Marotta following reports they had fallen out in recent weeks.

The former Italy international saw the pair at an event in Milan on Monday and assured he had not sensed any tension.

“They looked relaxed when I saw them, they were talking to each other,” he said.
