Luciano Spalletti stressed the importance of the victory as the Nerazzurri snapped their poor run of league form with a 1-0 win away to Parma.
“It is an important victory for us after the difficult defeat against Bologna last week. This result gives us strength and enthusiasm. We had prepared for this game in the right way,” he explained in an interview with broadcaster Sky Sport.
“There was a need for us to be careful particularly when defending their high balls because Inglese and Gervinho could’ve made things more difficult for us if they reached them.
“At the beginning they tried to pick us off in our own half and at that stage of the game we were doing things wrong. If you are not used to such a situation it can be difficult. Skriniar and de Vrij didn’t give anything to Inglese and did well to clear the high balls. I deployed Skriniar and De Vrij but I was undecided up until the last minute as Miranda trained very well during the week.”
“We are on the right track, there was many positive signs tonight.”
Next he shared his delight with the performance of Ivan Perisic.
“He reacted as a great champion and player to all that has been said recently with two games of the highest level, I am very happy.”
He then spoke on if he thinks the match can get Inter back on track after a difficult few weeks.
“Is this a victory that can steer us back in the right direction? I do not know, they taught me to be more cautious. We need to keep a very low profile and continue to scrape the bottom of the barrel, because that’s where we ended up in terms of our approach and overall performance. We need to start using our individual qualities again so we can play with more invention than we did in the first half, because there are moments where your opponent stays narrow and compact and the only way to get through them is by creating something out of a one-v-one situation. we managed to do that on several occasions in the second half though, when Parma were sitting very deep.”
Spalletti proceeded to discuss Inter goalscorer Lautaro Martinez.
“Lautaro? He has quality and plays for the team. He knows how to deal with the ball when it comes to him. Perhaps I waited too long to put him on. He made a positive impact and scored a great goal. He can play alongside Icardi and sometimes when I put them together they do well.”
