Former Lazio and West Ham attacker Paolo Di Canio has shared his thoughts on the current situation of Inter captain Mauro Icardi and his recent – and ongoing – goal drought in Serie A.

“He is the captain of the Inter and it is an important commitment to have. The team is in difficulty but the important player is looking for opportunities, he does not need to. When he is not scoring he does not even actively participate,” Di Canio said while as a guest during Sky Calcio Club.

Di Canio also spoke on the situation of Lautaro Martinez who has been continually forced to play as second fiddle to Icardi despite scoring more goals recently than he has.

“Lautaro Martinez should not take Icardi’s place in the team but in the meantime he is deciding games like those against Napoli and Parma. If you do not give him continuity, he too will have difficulty entering the team’s mechanisms.”
