Inter legend Lothar Matthaus has recalled being part of Inter’s 1991 UEFA Cup winning team as part of an interview with the official match day program for tonight’s match between Inter and Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.

“Being a part of that team was great fun and a greater privilege,” he said.

“Raising the cup was exhilarating, we were happy for ourselves and for the fans. They always spurred us on, even at that match against Rapid Vienna played at the Bentegodi. We felt an incredible heat and energy.

“We were strong, sure but the main thing is that we were a fantastic group: Zenga, Bergomi, Ferri, Berti and of course, the three Germans,” he continued.

“It makes me smile to think back on those big guys.”

He then spoke on manager Giovanni Trappatoni.

“What a great guy. He was one of the best coaches I ever had.

“All of those successes are down to him. His way of coaching was incomparable.”

Matthaus won the Balon d’Or while with Inter and spoke on the feelings he had when he lifted it at San Siro.

“Raising it in our home stadium was an amazing thrill.

“I remember the packed stadium and my ecstatic smile. Sharing that moment with the Nerazzurri fans was magical.

“Sure every player plays for his supporters, but mine mean the world to me.”

To conclude, he spoke on the match he would play again if given the chance.

“Easy,” he confidently said.

“The 1989 match against Napoli. I would play it over and over again.

“Not only because of the goal I scored but because of the electricity surrounding us.

“There are just no words to describe how amazing San Siro is in those crucial moments.”
