Inter legend Sandro Mazzola has urged Luciano Spalletti to sort out his differences with Mauro Icardi amidst rumours the pair have fallen out.

Icardi reacted angrily to comments made by Spalletti ahead of Friday’s match away to Cagliari, who had suggested the forward did not have Inter’s best interests at heart, posting a long message on Instagram which seemed to criticise the head coach.

Inter’s defeat at the Sardegna Arena has seen them dragged back into the race for Champions League qualification and Mazzola believes the Nerazzurri will need the Argentine to secure a top for finish.

“Icardi is very important for Inter and the club know they need to resolve certain issues,” Mazzola said yesterday.

“In these situations the coach is key. He needs to take control of things and have a face-to-face discussion with Icardi in the dressing room.

“Enough of the social media posts and cryptic comments, they need to speak to each other and I think Spalletti is up to the task of handling this situation.”

Spalletti is expected to leave Inter at the end of the current season with several names circulating as potential replacements, but Mazzola would like to see the former Roma boss continue at San Siro.

“Spalletti is the right man for Inter’s future,” Mazzola continued.

“He’s an excellent coach, very capable. Of course it could be seen as a failure to not finish inside the top four, but let’s wait before making any judgments.

“I’d hold back before speaking about a ‘crisis’, there are a lot of important games still to play. There are certain problems which need to be solved though.”
