Marcello Nicchi, the President of the AIA, the Italian referee’s association, has shared the latest plans for VAR and ways in which it could possibly be improved.

“We need to instil in the minds of the players that VAR technology is not the referee, it is there to support the referees. A new movement has been born, the VAR movement,” he told Radio Anch’io Lo Sport.

“We are creating the project of the VAR centre in Coverciano because we will save resources and the referees who work with VAR will be at ease.

We want to put referees in a position to have less and less pressure and work calmly. I believe it is an important project also for those who supply the technological tool.

“There are cases in which one is obliged to see it again and others when they do not need to. The referee and the VAR operator must trust each other.

“If the VAR operator confirms your decision, you will not go to see it, because it is not necessary. We are thinking about the possibility of creating a small group of people who can collaborate or join VAR to provide an even more quality project, but we need to do things in the right time.”
