Liverpool have joined the race to sign Inter centre back Milan Skriniar during the Summer transfer window according to a report from British tabloid newspaper The Sun.

The Reds have joined Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in being interested in the Slovakian who could cost a world record fee for a defender of £85 million (€99 million).

Liverpool, who hold the current transfer record for a defender, see Skriniar as the natural successor to his compatriot Martin Skrtel, who left the club back in 2016 after eight years at the club.

The report from The Sun goes on to detail that Manchester City meanwhile see Skriniar as the man to replace the ageing Vincent Kompany in their defence.

This season 24-year-old Skriniar, who joined Inter in 2017 from Sampdoria, has made 36 appearances across all competitions and has cemented himself as one of the best up-and-coming defenders on the planet.
