After just one season trying it, a decision has been taken to scrap football being played over the Christmas period in Serie A.

Festive matches took place for the first time a few months back as Italy experimented playing over the festive period, something many other leagues do across Europe.

With festive period matches being scrapped from the calendar starting from the upcoming 2019/20 season, a winter break over this period will be re-introduced.

Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina had the following to say to news agency ANSA on the matter.

β€œI have always felt that playing during the Christmas period was the best opportunity to let the families live the festive days but I understand that there are several views,” he said.

β€œOn the one hand, the fans want to live the event while on the other hand the technical and organisational part has a different view. The League made this choice in its autonomy.”
