Inter are close to agreeing a deal with Barcelona for Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic, according to reports in Italy and Spain.

Rakitic has received overwhelming criticism from supporters following Barca’s Champions League exit against Liverpool on Tuesday, with the club’s hierarchy now considering him surplus to requirements.

Mundo Deportivo today reported Inter are in talks with the Catalan giants for a deal worth €50 million, with negotiations over personal terms to follow.

“Either Barcelona accept Rakitic’s request to increase his wages or he will go and earn more elsewhere,” the paper said.

“President Josep Maria Bartomeu would like to build a younger squad this summer and Rakitic is no longer part of the club’s plans, having already been replaced by Frenkie de Jong.”

Corriere dello Sport confirmed the rumours and underlined how Rakitic would be the latest in a long line of Croatians to arrive in Milan.

“Inter’s main target for the summer is to upgrade their midfield,” they wrote.

Rakitic turned 31 in March and has made 265 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions, winning 13 major trophies in five seasons.
