Luciano Spalletti spoke with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport following Inter’s 4-1 defeat away to second placed Napoli tonight to give his thoughts and feelings on the game.
“We started well but then we made some mistakes at the back. From that moment on things got worse and we were not able to find anyone with the ball,” he began.
“In the second half I tried to do something different by playing with the two strikers. Napoli made us run more, because we had one less player behind the ball.
“We need to consider everything because after a performance like this I’m a bit preoccupied with things that aren’t working.”
He then looked ahead to next weekend’s match at home to Empoli.
“I’ve been in situations like this before, but we need to keep a clear head. We had a bad game, but we have our destiny in our hands.
“For the next match we must be ready, because it is a final. The players are very sorry for the result. If we had won things would have been very different but now we have to win the last game because the other results dictate this.
“Empoli will come to play their game, Milan need to win at SPAL, which is by no means to be taken for granted either.”
He was then asked if things will be easier this week than they were last year when Inter were chasing Champions League rather than already being in the qualification places.
“We still see this as a fundamental match, it’s do or die, and we have to show the character, sharpness, clear heads and quality of a team that represents the city of Milan and must get back into the Champions League. That’s what you have to do if you play for this club.”
He concluded the interview by returning to tonight match at the Stadio San Paolo.
“We were not unlucky, we made a mistake that cost us the first goal, then we made too much mistakes because Napoli pressed us hard. We started the second half well but as time went on they proved to be stronger than us.”
